Indonesian wins power lifting gold

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's Sutrisno stole the thunder in the World Powerlifting Championships in Salzburg, Austria, Thursday when he grabbed four gold medals in the 60-kilogram contest.

Indonesia's national anthem was heard after Sutrisno hoisted a total lift of 702.5 kgs, made up from 275 kgs in squat, 157.5 kgs in bench press and 270 kgs in dead lift.

Power lifting, the more-popular branch of weight lifting, offers four golds in each weight division.

The commendable feat put Sutrisno at the top of the best lifter standings after two days of competition with 575.97 points. Andrei Stanaszek of Poland and Konstantin Pavlov were second and third in the provisional standings.

A total of 196 lifters from 35 countries are competing in the five-day event which will conclude tomorrow. (amd)
