Qian to make African tour BEIJING (AFP): Chinese Foreign Minister Qian Qichen is to make a 10-day African tour this month, Xinhua said yesterday, two days after Senegal shifted diplomatic recognition from Beijing to rival Taipei. Qian, also a vice premier, will visit Tunisia, Chad, Djibouti and Seychelles between Jan. 11 to 20 at the invitations of their governments, the agency quoted foreign ministry spokesman Chen Jian as saying.

The signing of the deal between PT Ayuta Samarthya and the National Institute of Sciences (LIPI) was made on Wednesday, with Soetikno Wirjoatmodjo representing LIPI and Ilham Idli representing the company. The museum is managed by LIPI. Under the agreement, the company will retain 15 percent of the money it collects.

Obituary K.H. Shohib Bisri, a respected Moslem scholar and leader of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) organization, died of kidney failure on Thursday in Jombang, East Java. He was 66 years old. Bisri, who is son of NU leader K.H. Bisri Syansuri, is survived by nine children and 15 grandchildren. Antara news agency reported yesterday that Bisri, who is also the uncle of NU chairman Abdurrahman Wahid, had been suffering from the disease since three years ago.

Six students admit their role in brawl JAKARTA (JP): Six students being tried in the South Jakarta District Court yesterday admitted their role in a brawl which caused another student's death. The six students, Abdur Rohman, Nandan Mulyadi alias Penjor, Hendi Hendarsyah, Heryansyah alias Yayang, Jodhy Kresnapati and Fahad Mukrom alias Faad were tried in three separate sessions with the same panel of judges. Women, children evacuated SUBANG, West Java: Search and rescue workers are evacuating women and children from six villages in the Pamanukan district because of fears of worsening flood, Antara reported. The situation demands that we not only reduce our imports but increase our exports. At present, export growth is slowing down. One of the reasons is levies, which has become an obstacle to export growth and improved public service.
