Pertamina to cut 13,000 jobs JAKARTA (JP): The state oil company Pertamina plans to reduce the number of its employees by 13,000 within the next five years under a restructuring program to improve efficiency. Pertamina's director for general affairs, Baharudin, said yesterday that the company, therefore, will not hire any new employees. "We actually have not accepted any new employees at our headquarters in Jakarta since last May," he said.

UN rights chief asked to visit East Timor GENEVA (Agencies): The United Nations Human Rights Commission yesterday committed Indonesia to inviting Jose Ayala Lassio, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, to East Timor this year. The recommendation was made in a statement by Commission chairman Musa bin Hitam of Malaysia in a consensus declaration that Jakarta is forced to accept, Reuters reported. Ayala Lassio, an Ecuadorean, will be the highest-ranking UN official ever to visit East Timor.

Reclamation project needed JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Environment Sarwono Kusumaatmadja said yesterday that upgrading of the living environment in Jakarta would not be affordable without the reclamation project along the northern coast. "The reclamation project is indispensable. Otherwise the upgrading work will not serve its purpose," Sarwono said. He was speaking in connection with Jakarta administration's plans for the reclamation of the northern coastal area.

150 knocked down in stampede SERANG, West Java: About 150 people were knocked unconscious as thousands of Idul Fitri holidaymakers jostled to buy tickets for ferries leaving for Sumatra yesterday. Antara reported that the Merak quay was filled with hysterical screams as the crowd forced its way towards the counters. Many of the victims failed to get medical treatment from the emergency health center set up in the port.

"The change is to make the promotion abroad easier," Basari Bachri, an executive assistant manager of the hotel, said, reported Antara in Bali. He said Patra Jasa is more well-known because of its nationwide chain, including in Jakarta, Bandung in West Java, Semarang in Central Java, Parapat in North Sumatra and Bali.

They are blameless for their parents' actions but have to bear the seemingly enormous injustices of the current system.

They are suspected of taking the kickback from a contractor of a development project, Antara reported.
