Reclamation project needed
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Environment Sarwono Kusumaatmadja
said yesterday that upgrading of the living environment in
Jakarta would not be affordable without the reclamation project
along the northern coast.
"The reclamation project is indispensable. Otherwise the
upgrading work will not serve its purpose," Sarwono said.
He was speaking in connection with Jakarta administration's
plans for the reclamation of the northern coastal area.
The reclamation will cover a 32 kilometer stretch of coastal
land and be 1.5 kilometer in width.
It will cover most of the northern coastal parts of the city,
except the Tanjung Priok seaport.
According to Jakarta Governor Surjadi Soedirdja it will take
20 to 30 years for the city administration to complete this
gigantic project. (bas)
