Ismail Hasan appoints Jakarta chapter chief

JAKARTA (JP): Braving strong opposition from local senior party leaders, the United Development Party (PPP) executive board has appointed new leaders of its Jakarta chapter.

PPP Chairman Ismail Hasan Metareum said yesterday that the party decided to install Rusjdi Hamka as the chapter's chairman.

Leaders of the Jakarta chapter failed in their meetings last month to elect their own leaders by the deadline.

Rusjdi will have nine deputies: Arifin Arbain, Chisbiyah Rochim, Sugiat AS, Faizah Fachruddin, Mulyaningsih, Saud Rachman, Dja'far Badjeber, Helmi A.R. Syihab, and M. Yahya N.S.

The central board appointed Achmad Suaidi as secretary of chapter's board, and Husni Bachrum and Ali Imran Husein as vice secretaries. Elisman Ilyas is appointed treasurer and M. Chudori Syafi'i Hazami as vice treasurer.

Yusuf Hamdani was named chairman of chapter advisory board, and Muzaini Ramli, Echa Abdullah, Harun Al Rasyid, Arwis Rangkuti, Syahria Agamas, and Makmun Bakri as vice chairmen.

The central board's move last to appoint Rusjdi was rejected by a group of leaders on the outgoing executive board of the Jakarta chapter board.

Deputy chairman Yoenoes Rahman and secretary Mohammad Rodja of the outgoing board rejected the appointment of Rusjdi. Instead they appointed Arifin Arbain, who was the leading candidate when the congress ended inconclusively.

The chapter leaders, who staked their claim as the organizers of the congress, gave Arifin, Arwis Rangkuti and Zarkasih Marzuki a mandate to appoint the new line-up of the chapter's executive board for the 1995-2000 period. (swe)
