Soeharto unveils tight budget JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto proposed a tight budget to the House of Representatives yesterday for the fiscal year 1995- 1996 which, though up by a mere 2.5 percent in real terms, raises the salaries of government personnel by an average 10 percent. The draft state budget, which begins in April, will balance at Rp 78.02 trillion (US$35.5 billion) consisting of Rp 47.24 trillion in routine (operating) spending and Rp 30.78 trillion in public investments.

December inflation 0.52% JAKARTA (JP): Consumer prices in the capitals of Indonesia's 27 provinces increased by an average of 0.52 percent in December, bringing the country's inflation to 9.24 percent in 1994, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) announced yesterday. The bureau reported yesterday that last year's high inflation, which was far higher than the government's annual target of five percent, was caused mainly by the 13.93 percent increase in food prices.

Religious tolerance I wish to comment on Mr Mochtar Buchori's article about his personal transition towards religious tolerance (The Jakarta Post, Dec. 31, 1994) which I find most interesting. He described in the article how, as a Moslem, he took part in Christmas celebrations and church services in the 1940's and 1950's in both Indonesia and the United States. He admitted that he had a feeling of inferiority towards Christians in general but enjoyed singing Christmas carols.

Japan wins order in RI TOKYO (AFP): Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Ltd. of Japan has won an order worth more than seven billion yen (US$70 million) to build a paper-coating and -treatment plant in Indonesia, a spokesman said yesterday. The spokesman said Ishikawajima-Harima and trading company Nissho Iwai Corp. received the order from Indonesia's PT Pabrik Kertas Tjiwi Kimia. The plant is expected to be completed early next year.
