Stevedores want labor agreement

JAKARTA (JP): Around 5,250 stevedores at the Tanjung Priok seaport are hoping to obtain a collective labor agreement, which will regulate their rights and obligations.

Chief of Tanjung Priok seaport chapter of the All Indonesian Workers Union, H. Ono Suyono, said on Wednesday that the stevedores have so far done their duties but their rights to receive extra payments for unloading dangerous materials has never materialized.

Ono added that the Tanjung Priok stevedores' rights to receive extra payment for unloading excess cargoes is also being ignored.

Ono said that the daily wages of the Tanjung Priok stevedores are adequate since they have met the minimum physical requirement of workers. However, he said, their salaries are barely sufficient to cover the runaway cost of living.

Ono told Antara new agency that regular stevedores receive Rp 6,300 (US$2.86) each a day, crane operators Rp 7,224 and supervisors Rp 8,190 each.(mas)
