Scholars agree to idea of presidential term limitation JAKARTA (JP): More scholars are coming forward to support the notion of limiting a president's tenure to a maximum of ten years, but on the condition that the discussion be held after incumbent President Soeharto is no longer in power. Moslem scholar Abdurrahman Wahid said the idea of a presidential term limitation was not politically taboo, but should be entertained in the post-Soeharto era.

Hotel gutted by fire in Bogor BOGOR (JP): A fire gutted Sempur Kencana Hotel in Bogor's Sempur district Sunday night, but no casualties were reported. The local fire department estimated yesterday the fire had caused about Rp 300 million (US$113,207) damage. The fire, which started at 9:30 p.m., was extinguished at 11:30 p.m. by seven fire engines, Antara reported. There were only 30 guests in the hotel at the time of the fire and they fled in panic when they realized the building was on fire.

SGS wins Manila order MANILA (AFP): The Philippines will soon sign an agreement with the Swiss firm, Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS) for verification of export receipts, government sources said here Sunday. Under the agreement, the Geneva-based SGS will verify companies' export receipts which will be used as the basis for obtaining special tax credits that the government is extending to certain classes of exporters. Sempati Air delays appointment of new chief JAKARTA (JP): PT Sempati Air, one of the country's six scheduled air carriers, has delayed its plan to appoint a new president to replace the outgoing top executive, Santun Nainggolan. Sempati spokeswoman Rima Novianti said a shareholders' meeting, which should have been held yesterday to appoint a new president, was canceled because several commissioners did not show up. "Another meeting has been rescheduled for Monday," she said.

RI pair clinches satellite title JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's best men's tennis doubles Bonit Wiryawan/Sulistyo Wibowo have won the first of the 1997 Satelindo Satellite tennis circuit series, beating Australians Jed Gould/Jordan Kerr 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2. Sunday's final at Senayan tennis complex saw the duo win in two hours 28 minutes in front of a crowd that included Indonesian Tennis Association chairman Sarwono Kusumaatmadja. Bonit/Sulistyo received a US$393.75 first prize.
