Party supporters destroy street lamps UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: Vandalism of street lamps during the campaign has cost the mayoralty an estimated Rp 600 million (US$270,000). "The street lamps are among many public facilities vandalized by party supporters during the campaign," mayor Malik B. Masry said yesterday. He said he could not avoid spending taxpayer's money to replace the facilities.

Bakrie Finance Corp takes over Swadinamika JAKARTA (JP): Publicly listed PT Bakrie Finance Corporation (BFC) has taken over a majority stake in PT Swadinamika Multi Finance (SMF). Company's corporate secretary Sri Yudaningrum said that BFC acquired over 57 million shares of Swadinamika last week for Rp 96.9 billion (about US$40.37 million) or Rp 1,700 a share. She said this raised its stake in the multi finance company to 61.54 million shares or 91.85 percent.

Iranian faces 17 years in jail JAKARTA (JP): A state prosecutor asked the Central Jakarta District Court yesterday to sentence an Iranian to 17 years imprisonment for possessing and trafficking 155 heroin pills. Prosecutor Halim Tola said Mehdi Jarari, 28, a Teheran-based businessman, deserved the punishment because he said heroin was much more dangerous than other drugs. "Heroin is banned in Indonesia because it could affect the younger generation," Halim said.

It started when she had to take national exams, which requires a recent photograph. The simple act of taking a photograph became a problem when school management required pictures of the students without headdress. Party colors Like most foreigners, we fled Jakarta during the last days of the election campaign. Concerned embassies had warned foreigners to stay at home or leave the city. So we did, and we had an enjoyable time in south Sumatra, far away from the crowds, traffic jams, pollution and yes... the rallies. During those four days in Sumatra it looked as if no campaign was going on, being used to the endless rallies on the streets of Jakarta.

Border crossers may vote in PNG JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Irianese border crossers living in Papua New Guinea can vote in the general election there in June, the Indonesian ambassador to Port Moresby said Tuesday. Ambassador Abinowo Mukmin told Antara that the Papua New Guinean government would let the Irianese vote. Astra profits up by 63% in 1st quarter JAKARTA (JP): Publicly listed PT Astra International, the largest car maker in the country, posted a net profit of almost Rp 120 billion (US$50 million) in the first quarter of this year, 63.1 percent more than in the same period last year. The widely diversified business group said here yesterday that the company's net earning per share jumped to Rp 412 from Rp 253. Total net revenues rose by 9.14 percent to Rp 3.48 trillion in the January to March period.
