Party supporters destroy street lamps

UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: Vandalism of street lamps during the campaign has cost the mayoralty an estimated Rp 600 million (US$270,000).

"The street lamps are among many public facilities vandalized by party supporters during the campaign," mayor Malik B. Masry said yesterday.

He said he could not avoid spending taxpayer's money to replace the facilities.

"The supporters did not seem to realize that they were vandalizing public property," he was quoted by Antara as saying.

He said the damaged lamps would be replaced today. (pan)
