Social insecurity Only hours after Minister of Manpower Abdul Latief announced that the controversial order to divert funds from the state-owned social security firm Jamsostek was, in fact, a decision of the President, we awoke Saturday morning to news that President Soeharto would be taking a 10-day rest from his official duties. What does this mean? Does it mean that by the time the President returns to service, the fervor for an explanation of Jamsostek will have waned?

Street brawls claim another student's life JAKARTA (JP): The death toll of students killed during street brawls in the city this year has risen to 10 following the death of a 16-year-old student. The victim, Idris Suryadi, a first year student of a state-run technical high school, STM 7, was stabbed by a group of students from a rival school on Monday afternoon. He died early yesterday morning at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital after being treated for dozens of stabs wounds.

RP navy arrests 34 Chinese fishermen MANILA (DPA): The Philippine navy said yesterday 34 Chinese fishermen arrested off the northern coast last week would be charged with unlawful entry and illegal fishing. Navy Commander Ponciano Manalang said 45 tons of fish believed to have been illegally caught in Philippine waters were seized from the fishermen's two vessels. Patrols intercepted the Chinese near Derike Inlet off the province of Ilocos Norte, some 405 kilometers north of Manila, Friday.

Tribespeople to be resettled PALU, Central Sulawesi: Donggala Regent Sjachbuddin Labadjo has asked the provincial transmigration office to resettle 1,205 members of the Tomini tribe now facing a food shortage in Palasa village. Labadjo was quoted by Antara as saying the nomadic tribespeople roamed the mountainous hamlets of Bambasing, Nasai and Labani and used slash-and-burn methods. The long drought this year has destroyed their crops, he said.

Since the billing system of Satelindo changed some time in the middle of this year, certain invoices during this period make absolutely no sense. Minimum wage may increase 13% next April JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of Manpower's city office has called on the administration to increase the minimum wage 13 percent because the current rate "does not meet basic living expenses". The office's head of industrial relations and work requirements, Resbin L. Sihite, said the minimum monthly wage in Jakarta of Rp 172,500 (US$43.12) covered only 96 percent of basic needs as set out in the ministry's standard.
