Myanmar general to go to KL

YANGON (AFP): Senior Gen. Than Shwe, chairman of Myanmar's ruling junta, will lead a 50-member delegation to the informal ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur next week, diplomats said yesterday.

Lt. Gen. Khin Nyunt, first secretary of the State Peace and Development Council, as the junta is officially known, will accompany him at the gathering marking ASEAN's 30th anniversary.

It will be the first time Myanmar has attended the annual informal summit of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders as a full member of the grouping, after its much- criticized entry in July.

Than Shwe attended last year's informal summit in Jakarta, when Myanmar had observer status within the grouping.
