Cooking oil factory razed
Cooking oil factory razed JAKARTA (JP): A fire razed the Bimoli cooking oil factory on Jl. Jembatan Tiga, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, yesterday injuring one person. The fire started at 9:30 a.m. and was believed to have started in the factory's finishing unit. Firefighter Sukarjo believed an electrical short circuit caused the fire. Ten fire brigade and three factory trucks put out the fire within an hour. Police said no one was detained and financial losses were still being calculated.

Alcatel win RI contract JAKARTA (JP): French telecommunications giant Alcatel in association with Space System/Loral of the United States has won a contract to assemble the Multi-Media Asia (M2A) satellite for PT Pasifik Satelit Nusantara of Indonesia. Alcatel stated here yesterday that the total value of the M2A satellite contract was about US$350 million, and that its participation was worth about $100 million.

Administration to close two nightclubs JAKARTA (JP): The City Public Order Office is to permanently revoke permits of two of the 13 nightspots caught violating rules on New Year's Eve, an official said yesterday. Kusaeni Budiantoro, the head of the public order office, said the nightspots did not have permits to operate and had committed repeated violations. One of the clubs, identified as the H Discotheque, Central Jakarta, had been operating with a permit issued for a cafeteria, Kusaeni said.

Five foreigners arrested JAKARTA (JP): Three Chinese women, and a Spanish and South Korean man have been arrested for being "illegal" entertainers at nightspots during New Year's Eve festivities. Mursanudin A. Ghani, the head of the information office at the Immigration Directorate General, said Wednesday the three Chinese women were found working as prostitutes in a West Jakarta karaoke bar. They entered Indonesia with visiting permits, he said.

Colonel Wenny Warou, head of North Sumatra's police detectives, was quoted as saying the man was caught by customs officers on Tuesday morning at the Polonia airport after arriving on a Malaysian Airlines System flight. Warou said his camera, when X-rayed, was found to have the pills inside.

A police officer of the West Jakarta Police precinct said the landslide was caused by dredging work in the river. Jakarta high court upholds Bintang's jail sentence JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta High Court last week upheld the verdict passed by a lower court against controversial politician Sri Bintang Pamungkas for defaming President Soeharto during a seminar in Berlin in 1995. The High Court's verdict, which reached Bintang Monday, rejected the politician's appeal and maintained the sentence of 34 months of imprisonment issued by the Central Jakarta District Court in May last year.

Hit and run I am writing this letter because I am outraged by the behavior of the driver of a Toyota Corona with plate number CD109-02 in Kuningan on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at about 8 p.m. After she hit my car, I pulled over to the side. Instead of acknowledging the damage, she chose to take off. Judging from the plate number of the car it must belong to a high ranking official representing Indonesia, making her irresponsible hit-and-run behavior even more unacceptable.

Achmad said the four victims were Yopi Mantika, 21, Iwan Taruna, 19, Burhan A. Rachman, 22, and Kaharuddin, 31, whose bodies were found by security officers and local citizens at the mouth of Bima straits Wednesday night. The victims were buried yesterday.

Vietnam's trade deficit soars HANOI (AFP): Vietnam's trade deficit has soared to US$ 4 billion in 1996, up more than 80 percent on the previous year as the country's rapid export growth failed to keep pace with imports. Exports for the year were at $7.1 billion, up 30 percent on 1995 but imports rose 36.2 percent to $11.1 billion, according to figures released early this week by the General Department of Statistics.

Alim Satria said the orders from domestic investors had exceeded their allocated number of shares by 10 times. "The orders from foreign investors were four-times the number of shares allocated to them," he said after the shares were listed on the Jakarta and Surabaya stock exchanges.

Forestry export revenues rose 16% last year JAKARTA (JP): Export receipts from forestry last year increased 16 percent to US$8.3 billion from US$7.1 billion in 1995, according to Minister of Forestry Djamaludin Suryohadikusumo. Pelindo III's profits JAKARTA (JP): State-owned PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) III last year made a pretax profit of Rp 103.3 billion (US$44.9 million). Pelindo President Herman Prayitno said the company, which operates 38 ports, a container terminal and a port hospital in the eastern provinces, booked total revenues of Rp 254.5 billion in 1996. Herman said Pelindo's revenue increased 20.8 percent a year in the 1992/1996 period and its operating costs 12.5 percent.

DKB to fund RI project TOKYO (AFP): Japan's Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank (DKB) has set up an international loan syndicate to finance a project to build and operate a telephone network in Indonesia, a press report said Wednesday. The industrial newspaper Nihon Kogyo Shimbun said the 25-bank syndicate would extend US$480 million over nine-and-a-half years for the 840 million dollar project. The project has been undertaken by Japan's Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.
