Four trucks plunge into river

JAKARTA (JP): Four box trucks plunged into the Opak river in West Jakarta Wednesday after a riverbank collapsed. No fatalities were reported.

A police officer of the West Jakarta Police precinct said the landslide was caused by dredging work in the river.

"The total losses have not yet been calculated," the officer who asked anonymity said. No official information was released as to the content of the boxes.

The trucks, which had stopped at the river's edge, slowly sank into the river as the edge collapsed, the officer said.

Local residents said that the river was enlarged a week ago, but the way the riverbank had been built up probably incorrect. "The riverbank looked so soft that it was not surprising it could not stand four truck on it," a resident who eyewitnessed the accident, said.

It took hours for rescue workers to pull the four trucks out of the river. (jun)
