Karaoke owner to sue township TANGERANG (JP): The owner of a nightspot incorporating a karaoke bar and restaurant which was sealed on Wednesday said he will sue the township. "There were no prior warnings," Hermanto, the owner of the Grand Sentul Singing Hall in Balaraja said yesterday. Hermanto said yesterday he felt powerless if officials who sealed the place called Grand Sentul were from the regency. "But I will sue the officials if they came from the township," he said.

Purse snatchers snatched DENPASAR, Bali: Gianyar police on Bali are holding six suspected purse-snatchers who had been operating in the Sukawati art center, about 15 kilometers east of Denpasar. Gianyar police chief Lt. Col. Lalu Suprapto said the six male suspects, who usually targeted foreign tourists, were apprehended with the help of local residents. The kiosks are provided for free for market traders who lost their sites in the fire late last March. The distance of the kiosks to the market is one reason why traders are reluctant to occupy them. OBITUARY JAKARTA (JP): The deputy chairman of the Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI), H.S. Prodjokusumo, died on Wednesday evening at the age of 74. He passed away at the Jakarta Islamic Hospital at 8:55 p.m. on Wednesday and was buried at Tanah Kusir cemetery, South Jakarta, yesterday afternoon. He is survived by his wife, eight children and nine grandchildren. Prodjokusumo was born in Sleman, Yogyakarta, on Aug. 31, 1922.

Siemens wins RI order BONN (Reuter): Germany's Siemens AG said yesterday it had won a contract worth more than 500 million marks to add over 400,000 telephone lines to the telecoms network in eastern Indonesia over the next three years. Siemens said in a statement it would set up a complete network for private regional telecoms operator PT Bukaka SingTel International (BSI), using optical fibre lines. Indonesia has 190 million inhabitants but just 2.4 million phone lines.

Experts downplay China's economic threat to neighbors JAKARTA (JP): China will not pose a significant economic threat to its neighboring countries and the Asia-Pacific region for the next 20 years due to its internal constraints, experts said yesterday. Ronnie Chan, chairman of the Asia Society in Hong Kong, said the most telling constraint of China is its rampant corruption practices, which are considered by many to be the worst in the region.

'A Room with a View' finishes first JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta's A Room with a View became the first yacht to finish the 20th Darwin-Ambon International Yachting Race Championship on Tuesday night. Java JAKARTA (JP): The construction of a 29.5-kilometer toll road linking Cileunyi and Nagrek districts in West Java will cost around Rp350 billion (US$152 million), an official has said. Gandhi Harahap from the Ministry of Public Works, said Thursday that the Cileunyi-Nagrek toll road, which will be constructed by PT Wijaya Karya jointly with the state-owned toll operator Jasa Marga, would be linked to the existing Pandalaran toll road.
