Historic BI building in Bandung
From Pikiran Rakyat
I strongly deplore the renovation of the historic Bank Indonesia building in Bandung as reported on July 30. It shows the lack of historic awareness of the parties involved in the planning.
In the book on historic Bandung, Bandung tempo doeloe (Bandung in the early years), the city's beauty is compared to that of Paris, hence its nickname Parijs van Java (The Paris of Java).
If similar changes continue, the city will gradually lose its identity. Will Bandung's inhabitants remain silent? Who will take responsibility for this matter? The owner of the building? The City Planning Agency or the citizens of Bandung?
Is the renovation project of Bank Indonesia justified considering the historic value of the building?
What is the opinion of Bandung's historians?
