Fallen elevator kills five in RP MANILA (AFP): Five construction workers plunged to their deaths here yesterday after a service elevator fell seven stories at a building site in the Makati financial district, a hospital official said. Polyta issues $185m notes JAKARTA (JP): Tri Polyta Finance, the wholly-owned Netherlands-based subsidiary of propylene producer PT Tri Polyta Indonesia, has issued guaranteed secured notes worth US$185 million. The company announced Wednesday that proceeds of the issue would be loaned to Tri Polyta Indonesia, which guaranteed the non-callable notes. The notes are due to mature in 2003.

House wants next budget to rise 13% JAKARTA (JP): The House of Representatives' Budgetary Commission yesterday proposed raising the 1997/1998 budget by 13 percent on this year's budget to Rp 102 trillion (US$43.1 billion). The commission, at the conclusion of its three-day hearing with Minister of Finance Mar'ie Muhammad, also approved the government's budget accounts for the first half of the 1996/1997 fiscal year, which will end next March.

Sutiyoso said Wednesday the military would crackdown on people owning illegal guns in a bid to help police fight the recent tide of armed robberies. "Since the police's facilities are limited, we have a moral commitment to assist them," Sutiyoso said. At least two armed robberies have occurred this month. The robbers used Colt-32 and FN-45 pistols. Sutiyoso denied the guns the robbers used belonged to soldiers.

Therefore, I was not surprised when I saw a recently paved sidewalk -- of course, after it had been dug previously -- torn down again by another agency. Illegal brothels demolished JAKARTA (JP): Fifty illegal brothels along the Kosambi sub- district's riverbanks were demolished by police, military and public order officials Tuesday. The demolition surprised the prostitutes and their pimps because it was done without warning. The action came after local residents opposed the to brothels made a rash of complaints. The 50 brothels on a 5,000 square meter plot owned by PT Perum Angkasa Pura II housed 250 prostitutes.

Newsman's murder reconstructed YOGYAKARTA: Police will reconstruct the Aug. 13 deadly attack on Bernas daily journalist Fuad Muhammad Syafrudin widely believed to have been related to his reporting on corruption in the Bantul regency government. Djufri Taufik, the lawyer representing suspect Dwi Sumaji, said yesterday the police would hold the murder reconstruction at the journalist's house in Bantul, near Yogyakarta.

Commission activist Clementino Dos Reis Amaral said yesterday that the new members will be selected from about 20 candidates, three of them women. Merrill buys 10% in KIA JAKARTA (JP): Merrill Lynch and Co. of the U.S. has acquired a 10 percent stake in the publicly listed PT Keramika Indonesia Assosiasi (KIA), the ceramic subsidiary of the Ongko Group. PT Ongko Multicorpora announced yesterday that the 10 percent stake represented 8.49 million shares. It did not disclose the transaction value of the shares. "We're very optimistic about Merrill Lynch's investment in KIA.
