Rapid melting of Carstensz ice SYDNEY (Reuter): Asia's only permanently ice-capped tropical mountain is rapidly losing its mantle of ice in a further sign that man-made emissions of greenhouse gases are warming the planet, an Australian scientist said yesterday. Textile workers testy PURWAKARTA, West Java: About 400 workers of PT Yusung Mayer Tekstil, a textile company, believe they could lose their jobs after management told them not to turn up for work until further notice. "We are confused because they've not given an clear explanation," one of the workers told Antara. The workers affected were those in the spinning and finishing units of the factory. Floods inflict heavy losses BENGKULU, Bengkulu: Weekend floods and landslides caused material losses of Rp 10 billion ($4.5 million), officials said. Deputy Governor Usup Supriyadi said that the disaster destroyed 2,500 hectares of rice fields, hundreds of houses, infrastructure facilities and coffee plantations, Antara reported. Eleven people were killed and 20 others are still missing following the floods. Armed Forces personnel and volunteers are still searching for the missing persons.

Use 'Bahasa' Indonesia The recent call for the renaming of housing projects and prominent buildings in Jakarta has gotten a great deal of publicity. There is also an Indonesian flair for abbreviations. For example, Direktur Utama becomes Dirut or Tanah Abang Timur becomes Tanamur. The same can be applied to names of buildings.
