Replacement of Bemo soon
JAKARTA (JP): The city administration has given authority to the Organization of Land Transportation Owners to replace bemo, a three-wheel public vehicle, with another type of small vehicle.
Chairman of the organization Aip Syaifuddin said on Tuesday that the Governor issued the decree to allow the organization to form a special team of representatives from the City Law Bureau, the City Land Transportation Control Agency (DLLAJ) and the City Economic Bureau to prepare the replacement.
Aip said that the bemo will be replaced with a 1000 cc four- wheeled vehicle specially designed to operate on small residential roads and with the same capacity as bemo.
"The team will not choose to use the minivans which are currently operating in the city like mikrolet or KWK because they are not designed to operate on small roads," Aip said as quoted by Antara.
The city administration intends to phase out all three-wheel public vehicles in Jakarta gradually.
The head of DLLAJ, JP Sepang, pointed out recently that the bajaj, another three-wheeled vehicle, and bemo are not appropriate for transporting passengers around the city and are not included on the city's public transportation list. (yns)
