Gold panners out of work

PALANGKARAYA, Central Kalimantan: Thousands of people who came
to Sampit regency to pan for gold are in dire need of jobs after
the administration clamped down on illegal gold panning.

Col. Irvan Edison, chief of the local military district in
Panjung, Sampit, proposed that gold mining companies employ them
in their sites as one way of stopping them from encroaching into
their concessions.

"These people will continue to pan illegally if they are not
employed by mining companies in the region," he said as reported
by Antara. (rms)
