RI dominates judo competition JAKARTA (JP): Judo is the only sport for Indonesia at the 18th Southeast Asian Games in Chiang Mai, Thailand, which contributed the targeted set of gold medals. The National Sports Council (KONI) expected Indonesian judokas to collect six gold medals but by yesterday the athletes had earned nine gold, four silver and three bronze medals.

Flood strikes Central Java SEMARANG, Central Java: Flash floods caused by incessant rain over the past two weeks have hit six areas of the Pati regency, causing about Rp 4.5 billion (US$1.8 million) in material losses. Sandiman, chief of the provincial administration's social affairs section, said yesterday that the six sub-districts hit by the floods were Wedarijaksa, Margorejo, Cluwak, Gunung Wungkal, Margoyoso and Tayu. The last was said to be the worst hit.

The bill was introduced in the House last July, and took only a few months to be approved. SFRN's oil field in RI HOUSTON (Reuter): Santa Fe Energy Resources Inc. reported the best test of its Mudi prospect on the Indonesian island of Java saying the field is obviously a commercial project although it cannot yet estimate the ultimate reserves. The company said Thursday the Mudi No. 5 had combined flow rates of about 10,500 barrels of 35 degree gravity oil per day on tests of some 535 feet of hydrocarbon bearing rock between depths of 8365 and 8900 feet.

Sasak dictionary published MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara: Sri Widodo, the rector of the University of Mataram, launched on Thursday a Sasak-Indonesian- English dictionary compiled by an Australian writer. Nell F. Staff was assisted by five local co-authors -- Aida Muspiah, Baiq Rabiah Arkania, I. Gede Martha, Maryadi Faisal and Lalu Munahar -- in preparing the dictionary. It is published by the Mataram University Press.

Obituary
Obituary SARIAMIN ISMAIL, Indonesia's first woman author, better known by her pen name Selasih, died in Pekanbaru, Riau, yesterday morning. She was 87 years old. Her novel Kalau Tak Untung (The Unfortunate), published in 1933, became famous nationwide and was considered to be among the best works produced in the literary period of the time, known as the New Poets Era. Sariamin is survived by two children and six grandchildren. Her husband, Ismail, died in 1982.

10 bodies found after sinking KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: Rescue workers from the Pakue subdistrict have discovered 10 more bodies of people drowned when two boats sank in rough seas in Bone Bay, South Sulawesi, on Monday. As of yesterday, estimates of the number of casualties in the accident still varied. The Kompas daily reported that 23 people had been found dead, saying that 125 others were alive and had been brought to safety.

RI abstain from damning Nigeria JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia, and 41 other countries, abstained from a vote in the UN General Assembly over a resolution condemning Nigeria's execution last month of nine minority rights activists, including writer Ken Saro-Wiwa. Reuters reported the resolution was accepted on Thursday with 98 votes in favor, and 12 votes against. Myanmar voted against the resolution.
