Flood strikes Central Java

SEMARANG, Central Java: Flash floods caused by incessant rain
over the past two weeks have hit six areas of the Pati regency,
causing about Rp 4.5 billion (US$1.8 million) in material losses.

Sandiman, chief of the provincial administration's social
affairs section, said yesterday that the six sub-districts hit by
the floods were Wedarijaksa, Margorejo, Cluwak, Gunung Wungkal,
Margoyoso and Tayu. The last was said to be the worst hit.

Antara quoted Sandiman as saying that the floods damaged about
2,000 houses, 386 hectares of paddy fields and 456 hectares of
fish and shrimp ponds.

No casualties have been reported. (rms)
