Foreigners registered for int'l triathlon

JAKARTA (JP): As many as 17 foreign athletes from the
Netherlands, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia will take
part at the International Triathlon on Saturday in Senggigi,
Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

"The championship is held to commemorate the 37th anniversary
of the province. It is the second race held here," Sumartono, the
organizing committee chairman, said yesterday.

The committee expects about 150 runners from throughout the
country to take part in the triathlon. Seventy-three have already
registered.

The championship will start with two kilometers of swimming at
Senggigi beach to be followed with 60 kilometers of cycling from
Senggigi to Mataram, the capital city of the province. The
participants will then run for a stretch of 10 kilometers back to
Senggigi. The triathlon combines swimming, cycling and running.

Antara reported that the first place winner will receive
US$5,000, the second place winner will get US$4,000 and the third
place winner will get US$3,000. They will also receive trophies.

All other participants reaching the finish line will receive
consolation prizes.

Sumartono said that the committee has prepared a medical team
and a search and rescue team to guarantee the athletes' safety.
