169 aliens deported PEKANBARU, Riau: The local government has deported 169 foreigners for violating immigration laws, an official said yesterday. Chief of the local office of the ministry of justice Zaiman Nurmatias said that the aliens' offenses ranged from overstay and criminal actions to serious illness. Malaysians top the list with 97 violators, followed by Filipinos 7 and Finish 4, he said.

At the end of September 1994 I was shopping at Hero, Tomang, West Jakarta. My total purchase showed over Rp 20,000 and I asked for the promised encyclopedia as I paid the bill at the cashier.

Cohabitation is a vice in Lampung JAKARTA (JP): The city of Bandar Lampung in the southern tip of Sumatra has stretched its new anti-vice bylaw to include cohabitation. Mayor Nurdin Muhayat was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying that the practice of couples living together outside of wedlock is "another form of prostitution". He emphasized that the city will not tolerate kumpul kebo, the Indonesian derogatory term for cohabitation, which literally means "buffalo life style".

Bad loans increase at state banks JAKARTA (JP): Bad loans in the country's seven state-owned banks persisted throughout the first nine months of this year, despite the central bank's supposed commitment to dealing with debt problems. Bank Indonesia (central bank) Governor J. Soedradjad Djiwandono said here yesterday that the overdue loans in state banks rose to 3.88 percent of their outstanding credits as of September from 3.53 percent as of March and 3.34 percent as of last December.

RP sets 24-day cease-fire MANILA (Reuter): Philippine President Fidel Ramos said yesterday he had approved a unilateral 24-day cease-fire against communist rebels to mark the Christmas season. Ramos told a news conference the ceasefire would start on Dec. 16, the start of a series of Roman Catholic dawn masses in Asia's only mainly Christian country. The government has been holding peace talks with the rebels since Ramos took office in 1992.

Rubber prices increase SINGAPORE (AFP): Singapore's rubber futures prices ended firmer yesterday on huge turnover in line with the steadier Japanese markets, dealers said. "Kobe and Tokyo were up about five yen towards the end of trading, which managed to influence our prices to rise as well," said a dealer. Dealers said European buyers were short-covering on all three grades of rubber for most of the day while Indonesian players were concentrating mainly on TSR 20.

The crimes involve hold-ups and purse snatchings to murder and rape. On top of all this, the traffic is always chaotic. When we attempted to buy bus tickets at Pulogadung Station at the designated ticket booth, we were told the tickets were sold out. Later we were surprised to learn that scalpers dominate the station. They sell tickets with a 35 to 50 percent markup. The asking price was Rp 6000, up from Rp 4500 for Jakarta-Cirebon, West Java.

Foreign tourists book out Batam BATAM, Riau: Foreign holidaymakers have reserved between 40 to 80 percent of hotel rooms on Batam island for the Christmas and New Year holidays, hotel managers said yesterday. The holidaymakers are mainly from Singapore, which is only 20 kilometers from the fast developing island. Others are from Malaysia and Taiwan. Private television From Pos Kota Residents of Pemalang, Central Java, are unable to receive private television stations like RCTI, SCTV and AN-Teve. We are very disappointed about this matter. The well-off people can afford parabola antennae. But it is too much for us. We are beginning to feel fed up with TVRI broadcasts from Yogyakarta, which often broadcast programs of village affairs, regional news, and other subjects that have local values.
