Campus bickering worries top brass

SALATIGA, Central Java: Chief of the Diponegoro Military Command Maj. Gen. Soeyono, who oversees security in the province, is worried about the dragging conflict in the Satya Wacana Christian University.

"All the opposing camps should seek ways to end the bickering so that it will not hurt the interests of the students," he said.

He said that the military had no intention of interfering in the conflict at the present. "But if the situation gets out of control and we are required to intervene, we will step in," he said.

The conflict in Satya Wacana stems from the discontent over the election process of the new rector, John JOI Ihalauw, and was worsened by the dismissal of scholar Arief Budiman. (har)
