SBSI treasurer jailed
SBSI treasurer jailed MEDAN, North Sumatra: Hayati, the treasurer of the city branch of the Indonesian Prosperous Labor Union (SBSI), was sentenced to seven months imprisonment on Thursday for helping plan a workers demonstration last April. The Medan District Court found the defendant guilty of helping organize the demonstration, which not only caused public disorder, but also public unrest, reported Antara news agency.

Even if we substitute "International" for "European" everything has changed for the better in Indonesia. Plywood exports reach $2.24b JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's plywood exports increased by 2.53 percent to US$2.24 billion during the first semester of this year from the same period of last year, the Association of Indonesian Wood Panel Producers (Apkindo) says. Fire razes university campus YOGYAKARTA: Five buildings that house the post-graduate studies of the Gadjah Mada University were razed by fire yesterday. Strong winds fanned the fire, which began at 12.30 p.m. in the main building, and spread to neighboring buildings. Fire fighters worked for two hours to put the blaze out, but were not quick enough to prevent substantial damage.

Their latest, and probably last victim for sometime, was Mrs. Tunojo, a resident of Surabaya, East Java. Police found her bag containing Rp 200,000 in cash, as well as other possession, on the snatchers. They also seized a sickle from them.

Malaysian military officials said on Thursday that a Northrop F-5E jet fighter crashed into the sea near Penang island but the pilot ejected safely. There was no mention of a mid-air collision.

Forest fires
Forest fires I have followed the discussion on forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan with great interest. I would like to point to a situation here on Java, where so few tracks of nature are left. Baluran National Park in East Java used to be a very good area. However, visiting the park several times over the last year it struck me that the management of it is far below standard. Each September forest fires are lit by the local population to facilitate digging up tubers.

Sand mining From Sinar Pagi Recently I accompanied a friend to buy sand in Karawang, West Java. The block of land where the sand is dug up is encircled by a two-meter high bamboo fence. Through a peep hole I could see the people's activities inside. It struck me when I saw how PT CJ used a sophisticated machine to dig the sand layer until it reached the depth of about 15 meters. It seems that PT CJ has gone too far from the provision of the permit issued by the local government.

The ruling on the taxation is stipulated in the Tax Director General's Circular Letter No. SE-06/PJ.313/1994 dated Oct. 10, which was made available to The Jakarta Post yesterday.
