Lao president to visit Indonesia

HANOI (AFP): Laotian President Nouhak Phoumsavanh is to visit Indonesia on Monday for a state visit, the official KPL news agency said in a report monitored here yesterday.

Nouhak will be in Indonesia from Oct. 17 to 22 at the invitation of President Soeharto, according to a statement from the presidential palace in Vientiane.

Laos has been emerging from decades of isolation in recent years, reforming its economy slowly and opening up to the outside world. It has recently expressed an interest in joining the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Vietnam, another Indochinese state, is expected to be admitted to the regional grouping next year.

ASEAN, founded in 1967, now groups Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
