Better cooperation sought to tackle crime

JAKARTA (JP): City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Mochammad Hindarto yesterday advised newly-installed Tanjung Priok police chief to intensify cooperation with officers of related institutions to fight crime in one of the country's vital port.

Hindarto made the remarks after inducting Lt. Col. Timbul Sianturi, 44, in a ceremony at the Tanjung Priok port.

"Tanjung Priok port has a record of specific types of crimes, mainly those related with the economic sector," Hindarto said.

The two-star general, advised the new officer to focus his attention on typical economic crimes, mainly collusion between officers in the port making fake documents for export or import items.

Hindarto also asked police personnel to take note of the smuggling of goods and intensify the control of foreigners arriving at the port.

"A good approach of cooperation with other institutions and qualified personnel might lead this unit to help create a safe and well-secured port which, in turn, could help increase the country's stability and economic growth," he said.

Lt. Col. Timbul Sianturi replaces Lt. Col. Murawi Effendi, who has been assigned chief of the Central Jakarta police precinct.

Timbul's previous position was as an officer at the Intelligence and Security Directorate of the City Police Headquarters. One of the positions he held was as police chief of Central Bandung in West Java.

Timbul graduated from the Police Academy in 1973, Police High School in 1982 and Senior Police School in 1993. (bsr)
