Drivers, laborers block port JAKARTA: Dozens of container truck drivers and laborers blocked the entrance to Tanjung Priok port early on Tuesday to protest price hikes. They also demanded the implementation of the provincial wage of Rp 591,600 (US$57.5). The laborers, members of the Indonesian Port Transportation Labor Union, staged a street rally starting at 4 a.m. The drivers parked trucks at the gate making it impossible for other vehicles to enter the port area.

Moral movement
Moral movement I fully agree with Nurcholish Madjid that most Indonesian leaders are completely lacking the sense of the current crisis and are leading an outrageous way of life. Hopefully legislators, government employees, governors, regents, and other officials will hear him (at least a little). The moral values of these people are so low that it is impossible for Indonesia to get any respect from the outside world. And that must change.

Having had my MasterCard replaced twice, I have only used my most recently issued card to obtain some cash advances at a branch of BII in Bogor. Recently, however, I was back on the phone with MasterCard representatives in Britain, as the card had been used for purchases in a Taiwanese electronics store while I (and the legitimate card) remained here in Bogor.

Electricity theft costs PLN Rp 1b BOGOR: The state electricity company, PLN, suffered more than Rp 1 billion in losses due to the theft of power conducted by factories and households in 2001. Secretary of the local PLN office, Suargina, said on Tuesday that the theft by factories inflicted Rp 806 million in losses on the company, while the offense by households had caused PLN to suffer about Rp 340 million in losses.

Government expects new bond law by March Berni K. Moestafa, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta The government said it expected legislators to pass a new law on bonds during their third hearing ending late March, to allow the refinancing of some Rp 3.9 trillion (about US$378 million) in bonds that mature in July. Finance minister Boediono said on Monday the new law on bonds would provide the legal basis for the government to refinance old bonds.
