Students stage rally at AGO

JAKARTA: About 200 students from the University of Indonesia (UI) and Muhammadiyah University staged a rally on Tuesday at the Attorney General's Office in South Jakarta, urging the office to bring corruptors to court.

Some students were seen carrying posters saying "Eradicate corruptors and human rights violators (Akbar Tandjung)", "Dissolve the Attorney General's Office if it lacks the courage to eradicate corruption" and "Put corruptors on trial."

The students also called on the office to be more serious in handling corruption cases. They also urged Attorney General MA Rachman to resign should he not succeed to eradicate corruption nationwide.

During the rally, the students expressed their disappointment at the government's decision to increase fuel prices, electricity and telephone rates.

Later in the afternoon, 50 students went to the House of Representatives to convey their demands. The rally lasted only ten minutes before they returned to UI campus on Jl. Salemba. They promised to stage another protest on Thursday. -- JP
