Drivers, laborers block port

JAKARTA: Dozens of container truck drivers and laborers blocked the entrance to Tanjung Priok port early on Tuesday to protest price hikes. They also demanded the implementation of the provincial wage of Rp 591,600 (US$57.5).

The laborers, members of the Indonesian Port Transportation Labor Union, staged a street rally starting at 4 a.m. The drivers parked trucks at the gate making it impossible for other vehicles to enter the port area.

"The rally is fully supported by the Committee Against Worker' Exploitation, comprising various unions including the Jakarta Labor Union," said one of the protesters, Lucky. -- JP
