ID raids that include slaps

The chief of North Jakarta Public Order Office, Tonny Boediono, made a forced entry into a house in the Pejagalan area. He slapped the owner of the house, who happened to be a Chinese.

Boediono became angry because the man spoke rudely to his subordinates, whereas they were only asking him to show his identity card.

That was the excess in ID raids conducted by the Jakarta administration last Tuesday. Fortunately the violence was discontinued, as each party agreed to make peace and regard it as just a misunderstanding.

Almost every year, after the festive season, newcomers come to the capital city to try their luck, as they have no jobs in their villages.

The upholding of law that includes slapping can be interpreted that the government takes stern measures only against the common people. This unfriendly attitude is a marked contrast to how the government treats those who have refused to pay their loans related to central bank liquidity support or those suspected of corruption.
