Govt launches new farming credit scheme JAKARTA (JP): The government launched on Monday a new credit plan to replace the heavily subsidized credit for farmers (KUT) scheme. Minister of Finance Bambang Sudibyo said under the new scheme, the loan would come from commercial banks while the government would only provide a maximum 10 percent interest rate subsidy. Under the KUT scheme, Bank Indonesia, through several appointed banks, had channeled the heavily subsidized loan.

PAL reports surge in net profit to $17.6m MANILA (Reuters): Unlisted Philippine Airlines (PAL) posted a net profit of 792.96 million pesos (US$17.6 million) for the April-June quarter, up 12-fold from 65.4 million pesos in the same period a year earlier, according to unaudited results released on Monday. Revenue totaled 9.3 billion pesos, up 43 percent from 6.5 billion pesos a year earlier. Passenger revenue accounted for 83 percent of the total.

Gus Dur to witness peace agreement signing in Poso JAKARTA (JP): President Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid is scheduled to visit the riot-torn city of Poso in Central Sulawesi on Tuesday to witness the signing of a peace agreement between leaders of the Muslim and Christian communities. The governors of four Sulawesi provinces will also meet Abdurrahman in the Central Sulawesi capital of Palu, Antara reported Monday.

Brunei-Cambodia flights soon PHNOM PENH (AP): Regular commercial flights will begin soon between Brunei and Cambodia under an agreement reached during Prime Minister Hun Sen's visit to Brunei. Cabinet Minister Sok An made the announcement at Pochentong airport Monday when Hun Sen returned from a six-day visit to Brunei and the Philippines. Sok An told reporters that the details of the flights have to be worked out.

Medan paralyzed by massive public transport strike MEDAN, North Sumatra (JP): Some 10,000 public transportation drivers paralyzed the North Sumatra capital on Monday with a city-wide strike. The strikers, who were demanding cheaper spare parts, subsidized fuel and an end to illegal fees, brought business and social activities to a virtual standstill. The strike was initiated by the Drivers and Owners of Public Transportation organization (Kesper) here. It is expected to last until Wednesday.
