On human rights law In referring to Compromises vital to settle debate on human rights bill (The Jakarta Post, Feb. 5, 2000), I also refer to previous remarks by the minister of law and legislation in November 1999, about which I commented in my letter of Nov. 24, 1999. What I said then still applies, and I disagree with the absolute need for any bill containing a "retroactive" clause. Two missing in flood PURBALINGGA, Central Java: Two people, Mahyuni, 20, and Mihardji, 60, are feared to have died after being drowned in the troubled Gintung River on Sunday. A number of rivers across the province burst their banks after persistent rainfall since Saturday. Newcrest reopens RI unit MELBOURNE (Dow Jones): Australia's Newcrest Mining Ltd. said Monday it has resumed mining operations at its Gosowong gold mine on the Indonesian island of Halmahera. Processing was disrupted for seven days after civil unrest on the island caused an evacuation of 300 people from the mine to Manado, a town on another island. Milling from stockpiled ore began Thursday, and mining operations began Sunday, the company said in a statement.
