No compromises on trial: Cambodia

PHNOM PENH (AFP): The Cambodian government moved on Monday to dismiss speculation it was considering softening its hardline stance of establishing a Khmer Rouge trial in a bid to secure United Nations support.

Senior officials said a closed-door meeting of Prime Minister Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party (CPP) -- the dominant coalition government party -- was instead focussed on party strategy ahead of crucial forthcoming local election.

Cabinet chief Sok An said the meeting did briefly touch on the trial issue, which has for months been deadlocked over competing efforts by the UN and Cambodian government to maintain overall charge of proceedings in a proposed "killing fields" trial.
