What name befits our nation?
What name befits our nation?
From Pelita
The clashes in Maluku and Aceh continue and we do not know
when they will end. They greatly distress and really disgrace
Indonesians who used to be known for their friendliness,
civilized attitude, religiousness and harmonious way of life in
the world. Pope Paul VI once expressed his admiration about
Indonesia when he came on a visit here. He said Indonesia, with
its many ethnic groups, religions, races, groups, was living in
harmony. The pope also said Indonesia could serve as an example
to the world in the matter of a harmonious life bound by the
principles of Pancasila.
What have we seen these past two years? This nation has
apparently turned savage. A recent report on Maluku related a
highly sadistic event. Seven people were killed in clashes. Their
bodies were hacked and burned, then crowds of people carried the
heads through the streets. In Aceh, Marine officers were shot
dead while praying in a mosque.
Where is the religious trait that our nation once had? Was it
finished and buried with the reform era which was interpreted in
the wrong way?
What name would befit the Indonesian nation now? Is it still a
religious nation? A civilized nation? A barbaric nation?
Everyday people with no power have only one hope. Let us all
make peace, forgive one another and abandon all our passion for
greed. Let us live according to our respective religion, which
does not teach the slightest brutishness.
