Reinforcements arrive in Ambon JAKARTA (JP): Two battalions of reinforcement troops arrived in the Maluku capital of Ambon on Thursday as ongoing violence between Muslims and Christians in the city claimed at least two more victims and injured nine others. Antara news agency reported Adam Nirahua, 50, and an unidentified man were killed in a clash which erupted on Thursday morning in Ahuru in the Karang Panjang subdistrict. Dozens of houses in the area were also set on fire during the violence.

Bulog said Aramanjaya would deliver three shipments of 25 percent broken rice from China -- 25,000 tons in each delivery -- at prices of US$195, $200 and $205 per metric ton on a cost-and- freight (C&F) basis.

Ericsson predicts improved sales JAKARTA (JP): The local subsidiary of Swedish telecommunications group PT Ericsson Indonesia projects its cellular phone sales this year will exceed last year's 100,000 units, an executive of the company said. Ericsson Indonesia director Susanto Sosilo said on Thursday he based his sales projection on the government's prediction that mobile phone users in the country would increase to 1.5 million this year, from 984,000 last year.

Government sets haj pilgrimage cost at Rp 17.76m JAKARTA (JP): In response to the strengthening of the rupiah to the U.S. dollar in recent months, the government will slash the cost of the haj pilgrimage to Mecca next year to Rp 17.76 million. The cost, calculated according to an exchange rate of Rp 6,500 per dollar, is equivalent to US$2,732. The cost of last year's pilgrimage was Rp 21.85 million, or $2,731 based on the exchange rate of 8,000.

Fraud guaranteed The alleged plundering of almost US$80 million from Bank Bali revealed two major flaws which, if not removed, may abort the budding recovery of Indonesia's economy. First of all, the government blanket guarantee of bank deposits and claims, though succeeding in preventing the whole banking system from a total collapse, is killing market discipline and causing moral hazards among bank managers, owners and depositors. Political leaders need to act efficiently and prudently.
