Twilite Orchestra to perform 'Tribute to A Nation'

JAKARTA (JP): You can choose to celebrate the country's 54th anniversary in a number of ways, but one of the most entertaining and worthwhile choices would be to attend a performance of the Twilite Orchestra, which will be performing patriotic music and raising funds for a scholarship program.

Tribute to A Nation -- Salute to Indonesia's Independence Day 1999 is the theme of the Twilite Orchestra's concert scheduled for Dharmawangsa's grand ballroom in South Jakarta on Aug. 18.

Organized by the Mines and Energy Society (Bimasena), the concert, which is being held to promote the importance of human resources for the economic growth and development of the country, is expected to raise funds for the society's scholarship program.

"Fully aware of the importance of raising the quality of human resources to meet the challenges of competition in this era of globalization, Bimasena has taken the initiative of starting a scholarship program for selected students of mining and energy," the former secretary-general of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and the chairman of Bimasena's advisory board, Subroto, said in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post.

The concert will include philharmonic arrangements of patriotic music by famous Indonesian composers, including Mutahar, Sudharnoto, Kusbini and Ismail Marzuki.

Apart from the Indonesian repertoire, the orchestra will also perform Western compositions, including Edgar Elgar's Pomp and Circumstances March No. 4 and Peter Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture.
