And the year was capped off with the discovery of dozens of bodies and skulls of aborted fetuses and babies in North and Central Jakarta in late November.

Doctors take blood from seven women for DNA testing JAKARTA (JP): Forensic experts from Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital have taken blood samples to test the DNA of at least seven women believed to have undergone abortions. Forensic expert Djaja Surya Atmaja said the first blood sample was taken on Friday when city police sent the first woman along. The other six women came Monday. Djaja declined to identify the women, who he said are in their 20s and 30s.

Cruelty to elephants I refer to your Sunday, Nov. 23 article in the "Leisure" section about the plight of helpless elephants (Exploring the forest on elephant back in Way Kambas). I found the article horrendous and cannot believe you allowed it to go to press. Newspapers like The Jakarta Post should be trying to stop such actions, not print articles that seem to condone them. I cannot believe at the end of the article you actually recommend people to visit such an awful place.

Making a small step If we look at this economic crisis, fundamentally it is about the rupiah's integrity as a currency. It only takes one rumor for the rupiah to take another dive. It is sitting on thin ice. Plainly said, people have lost their trust in the rupiah as a currency. Trash cans in cars From Surabaya Post Despite winning the Adipura award for cleanliness, Surabaya still has citizens who don't properly dispose of their waste. I often see car passengers throwing food containers out of their windows while passing through the downtown area. Ironically it is usually the people in expensive automobiles that do this. Automobile owners should have trash cans in their car and take their waste to the proper disposal place later on.

Dharmindo dumps Indoprima JAKARTA (JP): The extraordinary shareholders meeting of publicly listed PT Dharmindo Adhiduta of the Dharmala Group approved yesterday its sale of 12 million shares in PT Indoprima Alam Marmer Industri to PT Kuarindah Ekamaju Marmer and Tommy Sianto for Rp 7.28 billion (US$1.45 million). President of the firm Boedijanto said Kuarinda bought about 5.75 million shares for Rp 3.5 billion and Tommy bought the remaining 6.25 million shares for Rp 3.78 billion.

Six arrested with heroin JAKARTA (JP): Bekasi police arrested six men, including three college students, in Jatiwaringin district for allegedly possessing and using third-grade heroin early yesterday. Bekasi Police chief, Lt. Col. Adjie Rustam, said police seized a few grams of heroin, commonly known here as Putauw, wrapped in nine packages from the suspects. "They were arrested in the early morning by patrol officers on the street where they had been loitering every night," Adjie said.

Alleged drug dealer arrested in a mall JAKARTA (JP): A middle-aged man was arrested in Kalibata Mall in South Jakarta for allegedly selling low-grade heroin called sabu-sabu, police said yesterday. City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said the man, identified as Yacob Jericho, 51, was arrested Sunday afternoon. "He was arrested while trying to find buyers for his drugs," he said.
