Policemen punished for various crimes

MANADO, North Sulawesi: At least 58 policemen, including four officers, have been punished for various crimes in the province this year alone, chief of the North Sulawesi police Col. St. Marsono said yesterday.

Marsono said they were found guilty of torturing people, adultery and desertion.

"I have to admit that not all police officers are able to act like priests or ulemas. Among thousands of my members in this province, some of them have the potential to become criminals or corruptors," Antara quoted Marsono as saying.

He said he would not hesitate to take tough measures against undisciplined officers. (prb)
