Perumka targets more profits
Perumka targets more profits JAKARTA (JP): State-owned railway company Perumka expects to book a net profit of Rp 21.9 billion (US$9.4 million) this year, an increase of 23.03 percent on profits of Rp 17.8 billion last year. Transportation Minister Haryanto Dhanutirto said yesterday his company's total revenue this year was projected to reach Rp 766.5 billion, an increase of around Rp 55 billion on last year.

United's profit up 27% JAKARTA (JP): Heavy equipment supplier PT United Tractor reported an estimated net profit of Rp 74.6 billion (US$31.6 million) last year, up 27 percent from Rp 58.5 billion in 1995. Frans Santoso, a director at United Tractors, said here Tuesday that the company projected a 23.7 percent increase in net profit this year to Rp 92.3 billion.

The embassy said on Tuesday that after checking passport details and the suspect's fingerprints, the embassy determined the suspect was not a South African citizen. "The passport he was using was the passport reportedly stolen some months earlier," the embassy said.

Police nab robbery suspects JAKARTA (JP): East Jakarta police have arrested two suspects of last year's fatal robbery on the Jagorawi toll road. They were arrested in their hideouts in the town of Jember. Jember Police Precinct Chief Lt. Col. A Madjid Tawil told Antara yesterday that Ag, 35, and Mc, 37, were arrested Monday. KL brokerage buys stake in Bank Niaga KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia's top brokerage Rashid Hussain Bhd (RHB) yesterday said it was buying a 20 percent stake in Indonesia's Bank Niaga and raising its stake to 63 percent in local brokerage Straits Asset Holdings Sdn Bhd. RHB said in a statement to the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange that it had signed an agreement to acquire the 20 percent stake in Bank Niaga for Rp 234.47 million (US$98.8 million).

Eddie Tong, the bank's president, said that the rights shares would be sold to current shareholders at Rp 1,600 each. "With the new funds the paid-up capital will increase to Rp 187.5 billion and the equity to Rp 350 billion," he said after the bank's shareholders meeting.

Three die in Semarang floods SEMARANG: Three people went missing when another flash flood hit Semarang Tuesday, inundating some 8,000 houses, causing several buildings to collapse, and forcing an estimated 1,000 people to flee to higher ground. Those who went missing were Sartini, 25, Rasem, 49, and Rusmadi, 51. Witnesses said the three residents of Tlahab Lor village, Karangrejo, Purbalingga, were drowned in the flood.
