Industrial estate corridors

JAKARTA (JP): Greater Jakarta's industrial estates will be concentrated in the city's eastern and western corridors in 2005, a senior official said yesterday.

Rachmadi B.S., the Ministry of Public Works director general of housing, planning and urban development said heavy industry and the chemical, textile and leather industries would be concentrated in the western corridor with the car and electronic industries in the eastern corridor.

He said Jakarta would continue to grow as the center for service industries and would be supported by buffer cities like Balaraja/Tigaraksa, Karawaci, Tangerang, Parung, Depok, Cibinong/Citeureup, Gunung Putri/Cileungsi, Bekasi, Tambun, Cikarang, Karawang and Jonggol.

He said greater Jakarta's population in 2005 would be 31 million, of which 19 million would be in the buffer cities. (bnt)
