Millions of bamboos planted in Jember

SURABAYA, East Java: Thirty-six million bamboos have recently been planted on 98-hectares in Sumber Jambe village in Jember in order to keep up with local demand for it.

"The cultivation will definitely have a positive impact on the bamboo handicraft industry in the province," Soemardi, a local handicraftsman.

He said there were about 300 small-scale businessmen in Jember engaged in the bamboo handicrafts industry and that a large quantity of bamboo was needed each year.

"The cultivation will also help improve the local people's economic welfare," he added. The price of bamboo is Rp 3,500 per stem, Antara reported.

The regional forestry office has likewise noted that cultivating bamboo, particularly on the barren land in the region, would help ensure the success of the reforestation program.
