Gas Negara, Brighton sign $1.3 billion deal JAKARTA (JP): The state-owned gas company PT Gas Negara (PGN) signed a 20-year agreement worth US$1.3 billion with Brighton Ltd. yesterday to supply 60,000 standard cubic feet of gas per day to Brighton's 600-megawatt steam power project in Batam, Riau. PGN's president, A. Qoyum Tjandranegara, said the gas will be delivered by PGN through the Asamera-Duri-Batam pipeline which will span 820 kilometers (km) from central Sumatra to Batam.

Pandit Nehru gets RI's award JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia has conferred the Bintang Republik Adipurna award for meritorious services on the late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister, for his strong support during Indonesia's independence struggle 50 years ago. The Indonesian Embassy in New Delhi said in a statement that the award was presented by Ambassador Adolf Sahala Rajagukguk during a ceremony at the Wisma Duta on Dec. 12.

Where there's a will ... In war there is no prize for runner-up. We shouldn't unduly lament Indonesia's second place finish at the recently-concluded SEA Games in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Winning on foreign soil is difficult indeed. The environment, sometimes, can even be hostile. We should remember that the odds are usually in favor of the host country. However, let's not allow complacency and over-confidence to set in, as perhaps happened in soccer.

RP budget approved MANILA (Reuter): The Philippine Congress has approved a 394.8 billion peso (US$15.07 billion) budget for 1996 after marathon deliberations over the past few days, legislators said yesterday. The approved budget was finalized by a joint panel comprising leaders of the 200-person House of Representatives and the 24- person Senate. The budget for 1995 reached 369.9 billion pesos ($14.1 billion).

Improving road discipline As a follow up to Law No. 14/1992 concerning traffic laws, a national seminar was held on Tuesday on the theme Order On The Road. According to the Director General of Land Transportation, Soejono, the government sponsored the seminar to obtain input from experts as well as from the public on ways to improve order on the nation's roads.
