Bandung cracks down on drugs

BANDUNG, West Java: Police are getting tough on drugs,
particularly Ecstasy, warning that anyone found in possession of
even the smallest amount will be detained for at least 24 hours.

Greater Bandung Police Chief Col. Didi Widayadi said on
Thursday that anyone found in possession of up to five Ecstasy
pills will be classified as a user, while those caught with more
than 10 will be deemed to be distributors and will be prosecuted.

Didi said the number of crimes reported in Bandung has risen
from 2,653 in 1994 to 4,151 this year. Car theft rose from 229
cases in 1994 to 272 this year, he said, while motorcycle thefts
have increased from 877 to 1,243. (pet/mds)
