Rodamco invests in Asia ROTTERDAM (Reuter): Property fund Rodamco NV said it had invested a total of more than 155 million guilders in two acquisitions in the Philippines and Thailand. In the Philippines, Rodamco acquired a 20 percent stake in an office building which is being built in Manila. Earlier yesterday Kuok Philippine Properties Inc reported Rodamco had taken a stake in the building's project developer in which Kuok is one of the other partners.

Pact on worker training JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Public Works Radinal Mochtar and Minister of Manpower Abdul Latief signed a five-year cooperation agreement here yesterday to improve the quality of workers in the construction industry. "We have to train our workers, both in technical skills and in management, in order to compete with workers from other countries," Latief said after signing the agreement.

Three killed in road accident GROBOGAN, Central Java: Three people were killed and eight badly injured when a bus they were traveling in hit a tree at the Ketiang village near here this week. Killed in the accident were two passengers and the Usaha Jaya bus conductor, police said. First Lt. Rusdi Hartono of the local police precinct said that the accident happened when the bus, which was traveling at high speed from Semarang, had a front tire blowout.

Danish company wins $149m cement projects JAKARTA (JP): The state-owned cement companies PT Semen Gresik and PT Semen Padang awarded two contracts worth US$149.1 million yesterday to F.L. Smidth-Fuller Engineering of Denmark to build cement plants in East Java and West Sumatra. Minister of Industry Tunky Ariwibowo witnessed the signing in a ceremony at his office.

Kartika promises no forced layoffs JAKARTA (JP): The management of Hotel Kartika Plaza promised yesterday that it will not fire any workers as the hotel closes for as long as three years for major renovations. However, the hotel is offering strong financial incentives to anyone willing to resign. The hotel's chief commissioner, Brig. Gen. L. Mulyanto, said in a statement that Kartika Plaza has set aside Rp 6.6 billion ($2.9 million) in severance pay for staff who opt to resign.

East Asian nations agree to protect RI workers JAKARTA (JP): Governments in South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong have agreed to formally provide legal protection to Indonesians working in their countries, a senior official of the Ministry of Manpower said. Suwarto, director general for Industrial Relations and Labor Standards, told The Jakarta Post this week that the three East Asian countries have accepted a proposal to draw up standard working contracts for Indonesian workers employed there.

Diarrhea hits Atauro DILI, East Timor (JP): More than 185 people have been hospitalized in an outbreak of diarrhea on the Atauro Island, about 15 kilometers north of here, a local official said yesterday. Chief of the local health office Rustam S. Pakaya said that there had been no reported fatalities and the Dili regency government has sent medical aid to the island. He said that the illness, which has affected five villages, was because of a water shortage caused by the current dry season.

Since 1993, the number has increased 7.5 percent, said Kay Ikranagara, executive director of The International Education Foundation. "There are now nearly 12,000 Indonesians studying at American universities compared to 11,000 last year and 10,000 in 1993," she told The Jakarta Post.
