Strong quake jolts Jakarta, West Java JAKARTA (JP): A powerful earthquake struck Jakarta and several areas in the neighboring province of West Java on Tuesday night, sending people streaming out of their houses in panic. There were no immediate reports of any damage. The Agency of Meteorology and Geophysics said the magnitude of the earthquake was six on the open-ended Richter scale with the epicenter located at a spot in the Indian Ocean, some 50 kilometers south of Ujung Kulon, West Java.

Merpati reopens routes
Merpati reopens routes JAKARTA (JP): Merpati Nusantara Airline announced on Tuesday it would reopen its routes linking Jakarta to Medan, North Sumatera, and to Pakanbaru, Riau, starting Wednesday. The company said the reopening of the routes was in anticipation of a growing number of passengers with the early signs of economic recovery. The airline will serve those destinations daily, using a 98- seat Fokker 100. It is offering special fares for both routes during the promotional month. (06)

Overdose victim dumped at river JAKARTA (JP): A young man died of a drug overdose on Tuesday afternoon, an hour after he was found unconscious near Ciliwung River in Menteng subdistrict, Central Jakarta, a witness and a doctor said. Faulana, a resident of Jl. Matraman Dalam, Pegangsaan, Central Jakarta, said a man on a motorcycle placed the victim on the ground close to his house at 1 p.m. and then rode off. When Faulana approached the man he found he was foaming at the mouth.

Man holds up bus, escapes with Rp 3m BOGOR (JP): A bus plying the Jakarta-Banjar route with 11 passengers on board was held up by an unidentified armed robber in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The robber stole valuable items from the travelers worth a total of Rp 3 million. The Batara bus had left the Kampung Rambutan terminal in East Jakarta about 3 a.m. when half an hour later a tall man at the back of the bus rushed to the front and pointed a gun at Rohmat, the bus driver.

Timor UNITED NATIONS (Reuters): A mass grave site was discovered in East Timor, possibly containing more than 50 people, while divers found the remains of more bodies at the bottom of a lake, the United Nations reported on Monday. UN military observers confirmed 18 burial places in the enclave of Oecussi-Ambeno, which is surrounded by Indonesian West Timor territory. Some of the graves contained more than one body, UN spokesman Fred Eckhard said.

10 in hospital have AIDS SURABAYA: As many as 10 people currently being treated at Soetomo General Hospital here have Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), the chairman of the hospital's medical team for the syndrome, Edy Soeyanto, said on Tuesday.
