10 in hospital have AIDS

SURABAYA: As many as 10 people currently being treated at Soetomo General Hospital here have Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), the chairman of the hospital's medical team for the syndrome, Edy Soeyanto, said on Tuesday.

Soeyanto said among the 10 patients was a nurse who contacted the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the condition which causes AIDS, while working at a hospital in East Java.

"The nurse contacted the virus when she was helping an AIDS patient. She probably had a wound and came into contact with the AIDS patient's blood," he said.

Last week, a patient with AIDS, identified as I Gusti Bagus Udara, 24, died at the hospital. Bagus, who was a tour guide in Bali, was the third patient with AIDS to die this year at the hospital. (nur/jun)
