Six injured in Batang brawls

BATANG, Central Java: A brawl between villagers from Damyak and Depok in the Tulis district broke out here on Monday afternoon, leaving six people seriously injured and four houses badly damaged.

Batang Police chief Lt. Col. Abdul Cholik told journalists on Tuesday the brawl was started by a group of Depok villagers upset by the election of Ahyak, 50, a resident of Damyak, as their new village chief.

"The Depok villagers were outnumbered by the Damyaks in the recent ballot for village chief. Then on Monday afternoon a group of armed Depok villagers attacked Damyak village".

Abdul said three truckloads of police had been sent to the area and the situation was now under control.(har/edt)
