Japan, EU want early creation of WTO panel on RI car row GENEVA (Kyodo): Japan and the European Union have taken action to pave the way for the early creation of a dispute settlement panel in the World Trade Organization (WTO) over Indonesia's national car policy, trade officials have confirmed. Japan filed a request Friday with the WTO Dispute Settlement Body (DSB), seeking to convene an extraordinary meeting June 12 to set up such a panel, the officials said on Friday.

Japan offers scholarships JAKARTA (JP): The Japanese government is offering scholarships to Indonesian high school graduates who wish to study at university or the College of Technology in Japan from the academic year beginning April 1998. The Japanese Embassy stated over the weekend that applicants had to be at least 17 years old and less than 22 years old on April 1, 1998. Applicants had to have minimum average examination results of 7.7 for the university and 7.5 for the college.

Three more HIV/AIDS cases reported JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of Health found three more people with AIDS/HIV in April, bringing the number of reported cases to 527. The ministry's Director General for the Prevention of Communicable Diseases Wisnu Katim released a statement over the weekend that one AIDS carrier, a foreign baby, was detected in West Java and two HIV carriers were detected in Bali and Central Java. AIDS/HIV cases have now been reported in all but four provinces.
